Cities for Climate Protection
The International Council of Local Environmental
Initiatives (ICLEI) developed the innovative Cities for
Climate Protection™ (CCP™) Campaign in 1993 to motivate
and empower local governments worldwide to take action on
climate change. CCP™ is a performance-oriented
campaign that offers a framework for local governments to
reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve liveability
within their municipalities.
The CCP™ Australia Program is delivered by ICLEI in collaboration with the Australian Greenhouse Office (AGO), an agency of the Australian Government. The City of South Perth joined the CCP™ Program in March 2001 and committed to the completion of the following five Milestones: 1. Conduct an emission inventory of both council (corporate) and community activities and prepare a forecast of emissions growth in the future. 2. Set an emission reduction goal for both corporate and community emissions. 3. Develop and adopt a local Greenhouse Action Plan. 4. Implement the Greenhouse Action Plan. 5. Monitor and report on implementation of the Greenhouse Action Plan. In September 2005, the City was awarded Milestone 5. At the same time, the City adopted the CCP™ Plus Program. CCP™ Plus is a unique initiative which takes CCP™ councils beyone Milestone 5 to strengthen and accelerate their greenhouse gas abatement, particularly in the community sector.
