WASTE MANAGEMENT

The City of South Perth will be focusing its efforts over the next 12 months to raise community awareness of the importance of sustainable approaches to waste management.  This will include promoting initiatives under the banner ‘recycle, reduce, reuse’.

In the recently adopted Strategic Financial Plan the City has the important Key Performance Measures that will be actively promoted over throughout the year.  These indicators are:

•    Increasing recycling targets of the recyclables collected by 5%
•    Reduce the amount of household waste collected by 5%
•    Increase Green-waste recycling by 10%

Regular graphical updates will be provided during 2002/03 in the Peninsula and in the local newspaper to provide feedback to residents on how the community is progressing towards meeting these targets.

The City provides a variety of opportunities to recycle, with the fortnightly yellow top recycling bin collection.  This provides householders with the opportunity to recycle the following items:

What can be disposed of at the transfer station

Maximum length of materials is 1.8m
Maximum weight per load is 2 tonnes

•    Paper, cardboard and drink cartons
•    Plastic bottles
•    Glass bottles and jars
•    Steel and Aluminium cans, including aerosols

Much of the waste separated out during the twice yearly verge side collection is also recycled.  Uncontaminated green waste, motor oils, metals and other items can be recycled at the Collier Park Waste Transfer Station (details below).

Each item that is recycled reduces the amount of rubbish going to landfill and helps to protect our environment.

So before you throw it out, stop and think, can it be recycled!
