Local Elections
Every two years, local government elections are held on the third Saturday in October.
Council Members are elected for a four-year term. At each election, half of the Council positions are declared vacant and a poll is conducted to determine the incoming Council Members. That is, one Council Member in each ward vacates their seat and one from each ward continues.
The City of South Perth holds postal elections, which are conducted on its behalf by the Western Australian Electoral Commission.
Enrolling to Vote
You may be eligible to vote in local government elections if you are:
- a resident of the City of South Perth who is on the state Electoral Roll
- an absentee owner of property within the City of South Perth

The Electoral Roll for those wishing to vote in the October 2009 local government elections closed on August 28 2009.
Nominating as a Candidate

To be eligible to nominate yourself, you must be:
- an eligible resident or non-resident property owner/occupier, and
- on the Electoral Roll as an elector of the district at the close of enrolments.
You don’t need to be an elector of the particular ward that you’re standing for.
