Celebration Zone offers relief from Australia Day heat
Crowds braved the heat to converge on the City of South Perth’s Celebration Zone on Sir James Mitchell Park to participate in a range of activities for all ages on offer for Australia Day.
Visitor numbers were lower than last year however the Celebration Zone, supported by Como IGA, Lotterywest and Hawaiian provided some relief from the heat, offering over 70 free activities and rides, including water slides and water fights in the secure 100,000m2 area.
Visitors were able to enjoy the continuous entertainment under the shade of the Big Top Tent, featuring live music, dance and a headlining performance from Broome’s Pigram Brothers.
The City welcomed 25 new citizens at the Flag Raising and Citizenship Ceremony under the Big Top Tent, followed by the Great Aussie Breakfast provided by the combined Rotary Clubs of South Perth.
City of South Perth Mayor, Sue Doherty, who welcomed the City’s new citizens and attended the Celebration Zone said;
“Once again, the Celebration Zone offered visitors a fun and safe way to spend Australia Day on the foreshore of the Swan River.
“Despite the heat, we had a great turn out and it was fantastic to see a diverse multicultural mix of families and groups embracing all that the Celebration Zone had to offer.
“With over 70 activities and all day entertainment under the Big Top Tent there was something for everyone from Zorb rolling, a parasol painting competition to crazy bikes and music.
“The City acknowledges the tremendous effort and enthusiasm from the 140 volunteers that helped out across the day, running the activities, handing out water and generally pitching in. Without the support of our wonderful volunteers, sponsors and community organisations this event would not be possible.”
