Australia Day Awards

As part of the City’s Australia Day celebrations, the City awarded the Premier’s Active Citizenship Awards to a selection of well deserving community members.

The 2012 Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship Award and City of South Perth Citizen of the Year Award went to resident, Lynn O’Hara in recognition of her significant contribution as an active champion of the promotion of the history and heritage of the City of South Perth.

As president of the City of South Perth Historical Society and member for 15 years, Mrs O’Hara, through her endeavours has actively promoted the historical and heritage interests of South Perth and its people.

Awards were also given for the City of South Perth Young Citizen of the Year and Active Community Group.

The recipient of the 2012 City of South Perth Young Citizen of the Year and Premier’s Australia Day Active Young Citizenship Award was Cynthia recognised for her outstanding leadership and commitment to youth affairs within the City of South Perth.

An active member of the South Perth Youth Network (SPYN), Cynthia Sasongko while challenged by a physical disability is a full time student and volunteers with the deaf community amongst other community organisations. She also works enthusiastically promoting and supporting events and projects that SPYN is involved in, including the recent Secret Event that was a resounding success.

The Rotary Clubs of Como, Mill Point and South Perth Burswood were awarded the 2012 City of South Perth Premier’s Australia Day Active Community Group or Event Award for the programs they deliver within the City of South Perth.

City of South Perth Mayor, Sue Doherty acknowledged it was through the efforts of the Mill Point Rotary Club in 1989 that the Australia Day ceremonies on Sir James Mitchell Park began with the current flag pole erected by the club.

City of South Perth Mayor, Sue Doherty and Member for South Perth, John McGrath MLA presented the awards at the Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony.

Mayor Doherty said, “I am proud to present these awards to this deserving group of people, all of whose actions make the City of South Perth a better place to live in.

“These outstanding achievements of local community members are recognised through the City’s annual Citizen of the Year Awards.

“With dedication to their causes, we honour these people who help create a sense of community and reinforce the value of a connected and engaged City.”
